How Much Is an Ounce of Weed in California?

An ounce of flower cost $45 to $300 on our two menus on October 14, 2026, before tax, and the typical ounce came to $200: two half-ounce jars at $100 each. Few strains come in a full 28-gram jar here, so for most of them an ounce means two half-ounce jars.

How much is an ounce of weed on our menu?

We priced it three ways, because an ounce can come home in one jar, in two or in eight. Each row uses a single product at its list price, before any discount or tax. 7 listings came as a full 28-gram jar, all of them from Dry Farmed Medicinals and California Love.

How you buy 28 gramsListingsLowestMedianHighest
One ounce jar7$45$110$110
Two half-ounce jars86$50$200$300
Eight eighths129$96$200$400

Every full-ounce jar cost less than the median ounce bought as two halves. At the median, eight eighths and two half-ounce jars both came to $200. Medians mix labels, though. Whether one strain's half-ounce jar beats four of its own eighths is a narrower question, and our guide to weed sizes answers it from the same menu.

Why does the price of an ounce vary so much?

The maker sets most of it. Across our flower shelf the price ran from $1.61 to $14.29 a gram, and the table shows that spread follows the label far more closely than the jar size. The lowest median in the table was California Love at $1.79 a gram, and the highest was Wild Light at $11.43.

Our own labels, Eden, The Classics, Honest Flower, Honeycomb Farms and High Road, don't share one price either, and the table shows each one's step from eighth to half ounce. At the median, an eighth from one of them listed at $25, against $35 for an eighth from the other makers we carry.

Does stronger weed cost more?

On our shelf it did, step by step. Flower labeled 20 to 25% THC had a median price of $5.71 a gram across 39 listings. At 25 to 30% the median was $7.14 across 139, and at 30% or more it was $10 across 42. Nothing on either menu was labeled under 20%.

How much is a gram, an eighth or a quarter?

  • A gram: neither store lists a single-gram jar, so a gram of flower here means a pre-roll. One-gram pre-rolls listed at $3 to $22, with a median of $7.
  • An eighth: $12 to $50 across 129 listings, with $25 in the middle.
  • A quarter: no 7-gram jars were listed, so a quarter is two eighths, about $50 at the median.
  • A half ounce: $25 to $150 across 86 listings, with $100 in the middle.

How much is an ounce after tax?

More than the menu shows, because tax is added at checkout. At the Hayward counter, California's excise tax and ordinary sales tax add 27.4% to the price. At the Tracy counter two local lines join them, and the total comes to 33.5%.

The order of the taxes explains those totals. California's tax agency charges the 15% excise on the price after discounts, then charges sales tax on the price plus the excise. So a $200 ounce comes to $254.73 at the Hayward counter and $267.03 at Tracy's. A delivery is taxed at the sales tax rate of the address it goes to, and our delivery pages give that rate city by city.

How can you pay less for an ounce?

  • A verified new customer gets 40% off the first order at either store. On a $200 ounce that leaves $120 before tax.
  • At Tracy, our own flower labels carry 20% off every day, shown on the menu as the sale price. On October 14, 2026, 80 of Tracy's 113 flower listings showed a discount. The discount comes off before the excise is worked out, so a $200 ounce from one of our labels comes to $213.62 with tax at the Tracy counter.
  • Tracy residents get 20% off at the Tracy store.
  • Seniors 65 and over, veterans and customers on disability or SSI get 10% off.
  • Club Eden members collect points on what they spend and redeem them at the register.

Ask at checkout which of these apply to your order.

Can you buy a whole ounce in one visit?

Yes. California lets an adult-use customer buy 28.5 grams of flower in a day, enough for a full ounce jar or two halves. Order by 7pm for same-day delivery, or pick up at Hayward or Tracy. Every jar on the flower menu lists its weight and price, so you can do this math before you order.
