Recreational and medical cannabis in California

California runs two tracks. Adult use is open to anyone 21 or over with a photo ID. Medical is a separate route with its own paperwork.

At our counters the practical differences are narrow, and this page sets out what they are. It is not advice about whether medical access is right for you; that is a conversation with a doctor.

Adult use

Anyone 21 or over with a valid government photo ID can buy from the whole menu. No recommendation, no registration, nothing else to arrange.

That is how the overwhelming majority of our customers shop, and it is what every price and limit on this site assumes unless it says otherwise.

Medical use

Medical access starts with a physician's recommendation. Patients can also apply to their county for a state Medical Marijuana Identification Card, which is optional and separate from the recommendation itself.

Patients aged 18 to 20 can access cannabis through the medical route where adult use is not open to them.

What actually differs at the counter

The daily purchase limits are higher for medical patients than for adult use: state regulation allows a patient 8 ounces of dried flower a day, or the equivalent in other forms, and a physician's recommendation can set a different amount. The adult-use limits are listed below.

A state MMIC card exempts the holder from sales tax on cannabis, which the excise tax still applies to. A doctor's recommendation on its own does not do this; it takes the county-issued card shown with a government ID.

The product is the same product. There is no separate medical shelf here.

State daily limits

What one person can buy in a day

28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrate, counting concentrate inside edibles, vapes and tinctures, set by the state rather than by us. You can also buy up to 6 immature plants in a day.

21+ only. Valid government photo ID required at pickup and delivery.
