What Is Live Rosin?

The word in front of rosin names what went into the press. Flower rosin is squeezed straight out of dried buds. Hash rosin is pressed from hash, the resin heads knocked off the plant first. Live rosin starts as hash too, except the plants were frozen when they were cut and never dried.

None of the 79 labels on our shelf says hash rosin. 57 say live rosin. 710 Labs labels its Persy line, 12 jars on our shelf, with neither live nor hash, and on its own the name does not tell you whether the press started from flower, from hash or from frozen plants.

Hash for pressing is usually made by stirring the plants in ice water and sieving what falls off. A 2025 study in the Journal of Cannabis Research explains why the cold does the work: "Ice water causes the resins to become brittle, while the remaining plant material remains more flexible." The heads snap off and the leaf stays whole.

California regulates even that bucket. The state's cannabis rules count water and ice among the solvents used for extraction and require them to be potable.

The same study is plain about the cost: "The drawback of the ice-water method is the loss of some valuable aromatic components, such as terpenes and light oils, in the water." You get cleaner hash and lose some of the aroma.

Why go after the resin heads at all? A 2021 study in Molecules found cannabinoids and terpenoids "in greatest abundance in capitate glandular trichomes", the resin glands on the flower. The same authors called it "surprising that older techniques of hashish making have received less technological advancement." Hash making is old, and the research on it is thin.

These are the maker's words. None of them appears in the state's cannabis regulations, where a tier is a license fee bracket or a kind of grow room. So read each one as what a single maker calls its own jars, and check it against the price.

Full spectrum is on 13 jars from Master Makers, at $32 to $55 a gram. Cold cure, on 4 jars from CBX and Master Makers, says the oil was cured, left to set somewhere cold, after it came off the press. CBX adds a tier number to its label, a grade that means something only inside that maker's own range.

Badder, on 25 labels here from 710 Labs, is rosin stirred until it turns opaque and thick enough to scoop.
