What Is Live Resin?

Live resin is a cannabis extract made from flower that was frozen at harvest instead of dried and cured. We list 56 of them across our two menus, and 39 of those are vape carts.

How is live resin made?

In four steps, and only by a licensed manufacturer.

  • The plant is cut and frozen instead of hung to dry, so it never goes through drying or curing.
  • The frozen material is washed with a chilled solvent. California counts butane and propane as volatile solvents, and allows extraction with them only inside a professional closed-loop system, run by a Type 7 licensee.
  • The solvent is purged off under vacuum, which leaves the oil behind.
  • The oil is whipped, warmed or left alone to settle, and that is where badder, sugar and sauce come from.

Every step above happens at a licensed manufacturer, not behind a dispensary counter. We grow flower, and the live resin we carry is made by other people: Raw Garden, Wildseed, Halára, Coldfire, California Love, Lost Farm and Jeeter. Our own Eden label is on the concentrates shelf too, 31 of the 292 carts and extracts, though not one of those is live resin.

Live resin vs cured resin

Cured resin is the same kind of extract made from dried, cured flower. Both sit on our shelf, so the price gap is easy to see: 5 cured resin carts at $25 a gram, against 39 live resin carts with a median of $40. Different brands sit behind those two numbers, so read it as one shelf on one day rather than a like-for-like test.

Does live resin really keep more terpenes?

Partly, and the research is narrower than the marketing.

  • A 2021 study in Molecules froze fresh flower and sifted its trichomes cold. It reported monoterpenoids "usually lost during the conventional cannabis drying and curing process".
  • A 1996 study in the Journal of Natural Products compared fresh and air-dried buds and found drying "had no effect on the qualitative composition" of the oil. People who knew the smell still recognized it.
  • A 2026 review in the Journal of Cannabis Research puts the change in post-harvest handling: drying temperature, storage time, oxygen and heat push the balance toward heavier sesquiterpenes and oxidized compounds, by amounts that differ from compound to compound.

Read together, freezing protects the lightest and most volatile part of the aroma, the part that drying and storage work against. It does not produce a different plant, and none of those studies put a hydrocarbon live resin next to a cured extract from the same harvest. Use your nose and the lab figures on the label, not the word on the front.

Badder, sugar, sauce and diamonds

The names describe texture, not strength.

  • Badder, also written batter, is whipped until it looks like cake frosting.
  • Sugar is wet and grainy, small crystals sitting in oil.
  • Sauce is loose and runny, with crystals through it.
  • Diamonds are those crystals grown large and separated from the liquid.

What is a live resin cart?

A cartridge filled with live resin instead of distillate. 39 of our 56 live resin products are vape hardware, and 13 of those are all-in-one units with the battery built in, so nothing screws on. The carts we list run 55.36% to 89.01% THC. The one CBD blend is left out of that range, because its THC figure is not the point of it. The extracts meant for a rig run 66.9% to 84.9%.

$18 to $50 a gram for the carts on our menus, with a median of $40. The extracts you dab run $20 to $41 a gram, median $27.

More questions about live resin

Why does live resin cost more than cured resin?

On our shelf the gap is $15 a gram at the median. Freezing at harvest, cold storage and a closed-loop run all cost money before extraction starts.

Is live resin the same as live rosin?

No. Rosin is pressed out with heat and pressure and no solvent at all. Live resin is washed out with a solvent in a closed-loop system.

Do I need a dab rig?

No. 39 of the 56 live resin products we list are carts or all-in-one pens, and 5 more are infused pre-rolls.

How should I store it?

Cool, dark and closed. The 2026 review in the sources below names oxygen, temperature and time as what shifts an extract's aroma compounds while it sits.

What does refined live resin mean on a cart?

It is a maker's product name, not a legal term. Most carts labeled that way on our menu are Raw Garden's.
